November 20, 2024

On November 20, the YMCA in Canada celebrates National Child Day and World Children’s Day. In doing so, we recognize the rights of children in Canada and around the world, and the role of the YMCA in building communities where child rights are promoted and children are supported to reach their full potentials.

This year also marks 35 years since the United Nations adopted the United National Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention includes the right of children “to give their opinions freely on issues that affect them” and that “Adults should listen and take children seriously.” This aligns with the work of the YMCA in Canada to Activate Diverse Youth Voices.

National Child Day is an opportunity to listen to young people. Not only to hear their concerns, but to learn from children and youth about what will help secure their rights.

The YMCA is pleased to have partnered with UNICEF Canada together with BGC Canada, Equitas, Jack.org, the National Reconciliation Program at Save the Children Canada, Plan Canada, and the Students Commission of Canada to support UNICEF Canada’s Youth Activism Summit and launch of the 2024 Reimagine Playbook on National Child Day.

The Summit will be livestreamed from Ottawa on Wednesday, November 20 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm ET. Youth will share issues that matter to them, including education, healthcare, mental health, and racism and discrimination.
