Ken’s Story: Volunteering with Purpose, Leading with Kindness

YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick

At 61, Ken Szeto is a familiar face at the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, leading Aquafit classes, teaching swimming lessons, and volunteering behind the scenes. But it’s not just what Ken does, it’s how he does it: with warmth, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Whether he’s fixing tech for newcomers or helping in the daycare hub, Ken gives his time generously. “It’s never too late to learn or make a difference,” he says — and he proves it daily.

Ken’s story is a reflection of the Y’s values in action: inclusion, belonging, and the power of community. His warmth and generosity uplift those around him, reminding us that giving your time can have a lasting impact.

At the Y, volunteers like Ken help create welcoming spaces where everyone feels seen and supported. His story is a powerful reminder that each of us has something to give, and that when we do, we help build stronger, more connected communities.
