Jill Siebert has lived across the street from the Kelowna Family Y for many years -she even watched the building go up! So, when it opened its doors in 1981, it’s no surprise she walked right in. Over 44 years later, she’s never really left.

Her journey to the pool deck is one of personal transformation. After nearly drowning as a child, Jill carried a deep fear of water for much of her life. It wasn’t until her 40s that she finally learned to swim at the Y, and she began volunteering with swim lessons almost immediately after.

“Volunteering has enriched my life,” Jill says. “I’ve gotten so much more out of it than I’ve put in. This is my second home.”

These days, Jill continues to give back in new ways – supporting fundraising events, helping with administrative tasks, and organizing Mingle Monday, a social meetup for older adults in the community. Her story is a powerful reminder that there are so many ways to contribute, and that the impact of showing up never gets old.

Across Canada, thousands of volunteers like Jill are at the heart of what makes the Y so special.

From swim lessons to youth programs to community events, their time and dedication directly strengthen the people around them. In return, the Y offers volunteers a place to grow, connect, and find purpose. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, or simply give back, there’s a place for you at the Y.
