Hien’s Story: Supported to Succeed, Leading Through Learning

YMCA of Saskatoon

When Hien Nguyen arrived in Canada from Vietnam in 2017, she relied on local employment and volunteer programs – including the YMCA – to gain experience and find her footing in a new country. Her first role with the YMCA of Saskatoon’s Before and After School Care program opened the door to a fulfilling career in early childhood education.

“When educators feel respected and cared for, they do their best for the children.”

A person smiles proudly while holding an "Award of Excellence" trophy and a colorful gift basket.

With support from her Y team and access to opportunities for growth, Hien advanced quickly, completing her Level 3 ECE certification and now working toward a master’s degree. Today, she is the Pedagogical Leader and Centre Director at the Fairhaven Child Development Centre – her journey a testament to her dedication to children, families, and lifelong learning.

Hien’s story is one of many that show how YMCA employment programs help newcomers build meaningful careers while contributing to stronger, more inclusive communities.
