Faith’s Story: First-Time Camper to Future Leader

YMCA BC

A group of six smiling children lying on the grass, surrounded by trees and a wooden building in the background.

When Karen, a single mother, was looking for a safe and enriching way for her 10-year-old daughter Faith to spend the summer, she discovered YMCA Camp Elphinstone. With activities like kayaking, hiking, and team games, overnight camp seemed like the perfect fit. But as a parent managing on a tight budget, Karen knew the fees were beyond her reach.

Thankfully, the YMCA BC’s financial assistance program — supported by donors — made it possible for Faith to attend.

With encouragement from YMCA camp counsellors, Faith overcame her initial hesitation and quickly found confidence, community, and joy in the camp experience.

That summer, she not only stayed for her first overnight but returned for a second week – and told her mom she wanted to become a camp counsellor one day.

Donor support didn’t just give Faith access to camp — it gave her space to grow, build friendships, and imagine a future where she could lead and give back. Her story is one of many made possible through the generosity of YMCA donors who believe every child deserves the chance to belong.
