Elijah’s Story: Growing Strong, Empowered to Shine

At the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth’s Fall River Early Learning Child Care Centre, Elijah Hawco’s journey is a powerful example of how inclusive care can transform lives. When he first arrived, Elijah couldn’t yet stand or walk independently. With support from YMCA staff and his physical therapist, that began to change.

Working together, Elijah’s care team introduced adaptive tools like his walker and integrated strategies into his daily routine. The result was steady, joyful progress.

“In short order, Elijah was walking assisted at the same pace as his peers,” says his mother, Adelaide. “Shortly after, he began walking unassisted before his third birthday. It couldn’t have happened without the YMCA team.”

As Elijah grew stronger physically, his social confidence blossomed too. He began engaging more with peers and participating in group activities — building not just mobility, but connection, independence, and joy.

At the YMCA, we believe every child deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated, and we’re proud to walk alongside families like Elijah’s every step of the way.
