Reconciliation in Action: A YMCA Commitment

September 30, 2025, marks the fifth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, observed alongside Orange Shirt Day. This day honours the children lost to the residential school system, Survivors, and the families and communities whose lives were forever changed.

YMCA Canada reaffirms our commitment to reconciliation through action and continued solidarity with Indigenous communities. We recognize that this work requires persistence, humility, and collaboration, and we remain dedicated to taking purposeful steps forward together.

In 2025, this includes hosting a national webinar to foster learning and reflection, and preparations for our first Indigenous Programming Gathering taking place at Camp Chief Hector in Kananaskis, Alberta in spring 2026. In partnership with Indigenous leaders and communities, we also continue working toward the development of YMCAs on reserves, supporting spaces that are community-driven and culturally grounded.

Through the sale of YMCA orange shirts, we raised $15,628 for the Orange Shirt Society in 2025, bringing YMCA Canada’s five-year total to more than $177,620 in support of Survivors and their families.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, YMCA Canada invites non-Indigenous individuals and organizations to walk this path with openness and resolve. Reconciliation is not a single day of remembrance but an ongoing commitment to listening, learning, and acting together.
