YMCA of Calgary receives largest-ever donation -- The YMCA of Calgary has received $3.5 million from Shane Homes — the largest corporate donation in its 115-year history in support of its new recreational facility in the northwest. The state-of-the-art, 284,000-square-foot facility will benefit residents of Ward 2 and all of Calgary’s northwest with world-class recreational opportunities. It will now be known as the Shane Homes YMCA in honour of the donation. President of Shane Homes, Shane Wenzel, said his organization likes to support community organizations like the YMCA because they share similar values such as health, wellness and education. “You do not deserve the right to derive an income from the community without investing back into it. That’s our job,” said Wenzel. Said YMCA of Calgary president and CEO Shannon Doram, “What I think this gift allows us, is to make sure no one is turned away. No one is turned away from an inability to pay or for financial reasons and that is core to the YMCA.”
