After the shopping frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, an event launched in 2012 to generate holiday spirit (check it out on Twitter at #GivingTuesday). For many Ys, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to share information with their members and participants about the importance of in-kind and financial donations, encourage people to take part in an activity or community event, share goodwill, or welcome new and enthusiastic volunteers.
This year, one of many wonderful gifts received by YMCAs was from philanthropist and long-time YMCA supporter Cor Van Raay, who donated $100,000 to the YMCA of Lethbridge on Giving Tuesday. The money will go directly to the Association’s YMCA Strong Kids Fund, which helps subsidize local families who wish to become members of the Y. When asked why this donation was important, Cor said, “I heard there were families who might not be able to access the YMCA because they can’t afford it. I wanted to help support those families coming to the YMCA to get healthy and live longer lives.”
