Appointments to the YMCA Fellowship of Honour are governed by a selection process established by the YMCA Fellowship of Honour Constitution and directed by an Advisory Council composed of:

  • A Canadian YMCA leader as Chair
  • At least three Canadians who have served the YMCA with distinction
  • The Chair of the YMCA Canada National Board and
  • The national President and Chief Executive Officer of YMCA Canada.

The Council considers nominations received from throughout the Canadian movement and recommends appointments to the National Board for approval.

Nominating Steps

1. Candidates must qualify for one of the two different categories, Officer or Companion.

2. Nominations form must be completed, including extensive YMCA service details.

3. A minimum of 4 letters of support for each nominee should be received. They should include considerable YMCA service details.

4. The completed nomination form, along with at least four letters of support and a photo of the nominee is provided to the CEO of their local YMCA Association.

5. The local Association must first approve all nominations in a motion by its Board of Directors and submit it to YMCA Canada.

6. The YMCA Fellowship of Honour Advisory Council then reviews nominations and the YMCA Canada National Board approves the recommended appointments.

Award criteria

Officer

  • A maximum of 6 Officers will be inducted at each investiture
  • Years of service: a  minimum of 10 years of outstanding YMCA leadership of broad and distinguished scope 
  • Impact: a local, regional, international or specialized contribution to the YMCA
  • Any volunteer may be nominated, with the exception of a current Board Chair
  • Staff  may only be nominated 2 years after leaving the YMCA

Companion

  • A maximum of 3 Companions will be inducted at each investiture
  • Years of service: a minimum of 15 years of outstanding YMCA leadership of broad and distinguished scope 
  • Impact: a national or international contribution to the YMCA; this person is recognized nationally within the YMCA
  • Any volunteer may be nominated, with the exception of a current Board Chair
  • Staff may only be nominated 2 years after leaving the YMCA

Nomination notes

  • Awards are not made posthumously (except where the National Board has already approved the nominiation).
  • Nominations from previous years are considered only if officially re-nominated.
  • Nominations are to remain confidential at all times.
