The YMCA in Canada

The Canadian YMCA Federation is made up of 48 Member Associations across the country that share a common mandate to advance the health and well-being of Canadians, with a special focus on children, teens and young adults. We’ve been uniting people behind this cause in one way or another since 1851, when the YMCA was first established in Canada. Today, 43 YMCAs and five YMCA-YWCAs in Canada offer programs and services tailored to their communities’ needs.

Member Associations

Each YMCA Member Association in Canada is a registered charity, established by engaged and caring community members. Ys are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by YMCA voting members.

Each YMCA in Canada coordinates the programs and services offered in their own communities, tailored to meet their specific needs. They are responsible for their operations and can be contacted directly about any details specific to their facilities, programs and services.

National Office

The national office of YMCA Canada fosters and stimulates the development of strong Member Associations and encourages collaborative initiatives; protects and enhances the reputation of the YMCA; and advocates on behalf of Associations regionally, nationally, and internationally. Working together to achieve the goals of our Federation strategic plan, PLAN Y, we are focused on strengthening our impact, extending our reach, increasing our capacity and building our brand.

How YMCAs in Canada work together

As a federation, we recognize our interdependence and commit to collaborating, both within our Federation and with external partners, to support our common purpose in Canada and abroad. In Canada, YMCAs are supported through our Regional Development Centres (RDCs), which provide training, support and shared services within geographic regions across Canada. As a federation, we also collaborate on initiatives such as national programs, events and campaigns.

The Global YMCA

YMCA Canada belongs to a larger network of YMCAs, rooted in local communities in 119 countries. YMCAs around the world are autonomous yet united in a shared commitment to support youth and strengthen communities. We are a member of the YMCA World Alliance, based in Geneva Switzerland.
